Well Child Visit Q & A

What is a well-child visit?

A well-child visit is an annual checkup to make sure your child’s development is on track and to provide preventive services, such as immunizations. Dr. Attoussi will advise you of the right schedule for well-child visits, but generally, these checkups occur at least once a year.

During the check-up, Dr. Attoussi performs a physical exam. He’ll compare your child’s growth against certain developmental benchmarks, including motor skills, height, and weight.

Your visit also may include:

  • Hearing, vision, and other screening tests
  • Blood tests for cholesterol or anemia
  • Immunizations based on your child’s age

This checkup is an ideal time to focus on your child's overall wellness. Don’t hesitate to ask Dr. Attoussi about any changes you’ve noticed in your child’s behavior or development.

What is a school physical?

A back-to-school checkup is similar to a well-child visit in its focus on preventive health, such as immunizations and screening tests. During this visit, Dr. Attoussi discusses your child’s:

  • Diet and nutrition
  • Amount of physical activity
  • Emotional and social well-being

Dr. Attoussi also makes sure your child or teen has the up-to-immunizations needed to attend school.

What is a sports physical?

A sports physical is an exam to make sure your child is healthy enough for sports. The physical typically includes a complete medical history and a physical exam of your child.

During the medical history, Dr. Attoussi asks questions about your child’s medical history, such as:

  • Has your child had conditions like diabetes, asthma, or epilepsy?
  • Has your child been hospitalized or had surgery?
  • Does your child have allergies?
  • Has your child been injured (fractures, broken bones, or concussion)?
  • Has your child felt dizzy, passed out, or had trouble breathing or felt chest pain while exercising?

The physical part of the exam will include:

  • Taking your child’s pulse and blood pressure
  • Recording his or her height and weight
  • Testing your child's vision
  • Checking the ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, and abdomen
  • Assessing their physical condition, such as joints, strength, and flexibility

If your child’s health checks out, Dr. Attoussi can sign a form needed to clear your child for participation in sports.
